Mindful Eating

September of 2013 was an eye opener for me.  That was the time I found out that my father had cancer.  My father was my best friend, my first true love and my hero.  I started to research what caused cancer, prevent cancer and cure cancer.  I found out that there was a lot of food that you can eat that can help prevent cancer but also there is food that can cause cancer.

Processed meat contain chemical preservatives that can cause cancer, sodium nitrate has been linked to all forms of cancer.  Soda pop loaded with sugar, coloring and food chemicals literally feed cancer.  Non organic fruits have hormones to make them bigger which cause pesticides which can cause cancer.  Potato chips are high in cholesterol and fat, they have sodium levels which cause cancer and can also make you gain weight.

Eating lots of Organic fruits and vegetables can help fight cancer (at least five servings a day).  People that consume lots of garlic are less likely to develop cancer. Garlic can stop cancer cells from working; a clove a day is very helpful in preventing the disease.  Berries have very powerful antioxidants, the help keep cancer cells from growing or spreading.  Green tea contains antioxidants called catechins.  It has been known that green tea can shrink tumors and reduce its growth.  Red grapes and red wine also contain antioxidants that can prevent cancer; it limits the growth of cancer cells in the body.

After doing my research I began to buy all organic food, milk and eggs for my dad.  I even went on Amazon and got the green leaves so he can drink two glasses a day.  It can be very expensive getting all organic food but my father was worth it.  I even read that Soursop fruit can help fight cancer, I was not able to find any of it here locally.  I started to order it on line and my brother found a store in London Ontario that had the fruit.  He would go every other weekend just to buy the fruit.  Fruits markets here in Michigan should start bringing this fruit locally.
Unfortunately nothing made the Cancer to stop from spreading, my father passed away within three months.  His tumor was stage 4 and he had over 21 of them in his body.  After I seen my father suffering and in pain, I decided to start eating healthier and even educate my friends and family.  No one deserves to die this way, it is inhuman.

I was lucky to have been there for my father throughout this terrible journey, for three months I was there (doctor’s visit, chemo injections, hospital and hospice).  My father passed away holding my hands, I was so happy that I was able to support and comfort him during that time.
He passed away January 11 at 11:30 am of this year, until today I cannot get over how fast cancer took his life away from us.  We should all think about what we put in our bodies and start eating healthy and exercise more often. We have the choice to do so; I think we owe it to ourselves and most importantly to our loved ones.

Workout, enjoy all that nature has to offer us, have a makeover and enjoy life, its true what they say “life is too short”.

Get ready for Summer

Are you ready for summer?  I know I am J

My favorite thing about summer is the weather; I love the humidity and the sun.  I enjoy doing
BBQ, I hardly cook in the summer.  I have the Grill out and ready, I enjoy grilling steak, salmon
chicken and vegetables.  I make sure my fridge is full of Beer, Lemonade and Margarita mix.
Usually on Sundays I go to a water park with the family, we play tennis, soccer and basketball.
The most things that make me happy about summer are swimming at Lifetime Fitness in
Canton.  I love their outdoor pool, after a long intense workout I change into my bathing suit
and jump right away into the pool.  After a nice swim, I put my music on my IPhone and sit and
relax.  I love to get a good tan, since I love the sun I don’t mind sitting and enjoying the nice hot
weather.

Is there anything you've always wanted to do, but never had the chance to?  Summer
is the time, try riding a bike, learn how to swim, play basketball, soccer or even volleyball.
Summer is the season of festivals, you can check your city schedule and try to attend and make
a day out of it.  It always fun to have a summer party especially if you have a big backyard.  Tell
all of your friends to bring different kinds of food, grab some beers and wine and let the party
begin.  I have always wanted to go camping; I think this summer will be the time that I will get
myself a tent.  I will invite few friends and maybe go up north.

Summer is the season that flowers will blossom, usually in April I plant flowers at the front porch.  I enjoy sitting in the morning with my coffee in my hands watching my flowers blossom.  I plant vegetables in my
back yard (tomatoes, cucumbers), when its night time I enjoy doing myself a salad  using my
own vegetables.  Sometimes I make a fruit salad with some ice cream yummy J
Make sure you take lots and lots of pictures of you and your friends enjoying the weather.  If
You have a pet make sure you take them out for a nice walk, they should enjoy summer too J
Summer is the season of sundresses and shorts, flip flops and nice heels.  Put on a nice cute
dress and hit downtown Ann Arbor, they have so many nice cafes and restaurants.  Their night
life is always jamming and happening.  Whatever you decide to do this summer, make it a
memorable one.  I am going to BBQ, swim, drink some beers, go camping and be happy J

what are you going to do?

What to do at the Gym

I love working out, I actually enjoy it.  To me working out is a big stress relief from work and school.  I go to Life Time Fitness in Canton, Michigan.  The reason I love this Gym is because its super clean, great inside and outside pool and lots of room to work out.  Great Zumba classes and Kickboxing classes.  If you had never tried a Zumba class you are missing a lot.  It's a form of workout that involves dancing, the music is awesome.  If you love zumba, you should also go see Robin at The Forum Center in Westland.  She is so good at it and she actually makes you have fun while working out.  The best work out is in the morning but with spring classes and working 40 hours a week, I been going late at night whenever I get the chance.  Usually I walk on the treadmill for 30 minutes, than off to the Elliptical for another 30 minutes.  After an hour of Cardio work out I hit the weights.  I do legs, arms and chest weight.  For legs I usually do 50 lbs, arms and chest I do 35 lbs.  When I have a bad day I usually hit the pool and swim.  I love swimming, I am very good at it.  When I was younger I use to wish that I can live in the sea or the beach.  The best feeling you can get is when you are done working out and you are all sweats and pain but it feels like a big accomplishment.  They say the best thing is to work out five hours a week, I say work out as much as you can wherever you can.  The biggest challenge is eating healthy while working out.  You must eat lots of Protein and Fiber.  Eat lots of vegetables and lots of fruits and most importantly do not eat after 6 pm.  The rush I get from working out is way better than eating a piece of cake or ice cream in a hot summer day.  Right now my goal is to lose 10 lbs, its been hard especially since I work over 40 hours a week and go to school full time, but I am determine to lose it before the fall.  If going to the Gym is not your thing, go biking or hiking, do something that you enjoy and will make you healthy at the same time.

Lets get back to those jeans that are hiding somewhere in our closet

I been struggling to lose weight for a while now, I am not overweight but I would like to lose 10lbs :)  I have learned throughout my journey that the best way to lose weight is to actually eat 4 -6 times a day but small portions and of course healthy choices.  Going to the Gym really helps and it actually is a big stress relief for me.  Once you get in the habit of going to the Gym you would actually get addicted to it.
Eat less, more often. Rather than eating large meals, chop up your eating into smaller portions throughout the day. I found myself eating 3 meals most days and having a snack around 3 pm as well as another in the evening. That was enough to keep me from feeling hungry while still eating less in total.  Don't eat right before going to bed. I've read this numerous times and don't get why it works, but it does. I set a limit of 3 hours. So I planned to go to bed at midnight, I wouldn't eat past 9 pm. 3.Brush your teeth early. For whatever reason, I won't eat when my teeth still feel clean. By brushing them several hours before bed, it was easier to accomplish.  Kick the sugar habit. If you drink sugared soft drinks (I used to be a Mt. Dew and Coke fan), replace them either with their diet counterparts or water. This can make a very, very big difference.  Eat vegetables before the main course. Whenever possible, I'd make sure to have an ample serving of a vegetable (you get very few calories for the amount you eat) before eating the denser main course--often a meat or fish. You'll need less of the dense stuff to be happy.  Update your spreadsheet daily. Keeping a running count will help you ration out the rest of your daily calorie allowance.  Update your spreadsheet daily. Keeping a running count will help you ration out the rest of your daily calorie allowance, which we'll talk about tomorrow.  Get used to leftovers. When you eat out, expect to take some of your meal home. If you eat standard restaurant portions, you'll almost certainly overeat.  Shop with calories in mind, when you're at the grocery store, spends some extra time reading the labels and nutritional information. You'll probably end up changing your shopping habits along the way. You'd be surprised by the how widely the calorie counts in various granola bars vary, for example.  Lets follow these steps and get fit and live a healthy life.
